Climbing Wall Classes
We offer classes that are open to all Rec Center users. Participants may register by paying the course fee at the Outdoor Recreation Center, located on the main floor of the SRC. Once payment has been made, participants must show up at the Climbing Wall desk 15 minutes prior to the class session to fill out paperwork.
Refunds must be requested 24 hours prior to your scheduled class. Failure to attend your scheduled class will result in forfeiture of your course fee.
BELAY CLASS – Cost $10
This two-and-a-half hour course teaches beginning climbers what they need to know to climb indoors, including safety, signals, knots, belaying, and movement. Participants must demonstrate competence in these skills to become a probationary belayer. Then, the probationary belayer must belay at the wall with a backup belayer 5 times within one and a half months of the class. After completing this probationary period, the individual must pass the belay test to become a WVU Climbing Wall Belayer. Summer: Classes will not be scheduled regularly. If you are interested in taking a Belay Class, submit your name, contact, and available times at the climbing wall. We will get hold of you to schedule a class.
BELAY TEST (Written & Practical Exam – free)
This 30-minute skills assessment is designed for competent climbers. It introduces the specifics of climbing at the Student Recreation Center and reviews proper safety procedures. Climbers should be able to tie in, communicate, belay safely, and know our rules. If you do not successfully complete the Climbing Skills Test, you will have the option to retake the test or to enroll in the Climbing Gym Belay Class. Belay tests are done on a first come-first served basis during times that qualified staff are working at the wall. Availability for tests is best during the fall and spring semesters. Call to check availability (293-5076).
