We offer classes that are open to all WVU Student Rec Center users. Participants may register by paying the course fee online, at the Student Rec Center main desk or at the Outdoor Recreation Center (credit card payment only). Once payment has been made, participants must show up at the Climbing Wall desk 15 minutes prior to the class session to fill out paperwork.
Refunds must be requested 24 hours prior to your scheduled class. Failure to attend your scheduled class will result in forfeiture of your course fee.
BELAY CLASS | $12.00
This two-and-a-half hour course teaches beginning climbers what they need to know to climb indoors, including safety, signals, knots, and belaying. Participants must demonstrate competence in these skills to become a probationary belayer. Then, the probationary belayer must wait until the next day to take a belay skills test. Upon passing this test the probationary belayer becomes a belayer.
Summer: Classes will not be scheduled regularly. If you are interested in taking a Belay Class, submit your name, contact, and available times here. We will get hold of you to schedule a class.

BELAY TEST (Written & Practical Exam) | Free
This 10-minute skills assessment is designed for experienced and competent belayers. This short test evaluates knowledge of specifics for climbing at the WVU Student Recreation Center and reviews standard rope security procedures for a top rope setting. Climbers should be able to connect to the rope system as both climber and belayer, properly utilize standard belay communication, belay a climber safely utilizing practices congruent with the Universal Belay Standard and have working knowledge our facility rules. If you do not successfully complete the Belay Skills Test, you will have the option to retake the test or to enroll in one of our Belay Classes. Belay tests are done on a first come, first served basis during times that staff are working at the wall. Availability for tests is best during the fall and spring semesters.
